Crow's Dance
04:11
|
|||
The crow dances sideways before death,
in a black overcoat and long beak,
tiptoeing over bones and ragged flesh.
Carrion flies hum above him,
above sun-baked asphalt laid through trees.
The scent of the sun lingers;
the rain clouds buzz with whispers
along the edges of the horizon,
peeking over treetops to watch the dance.
No one moves.
This land is owned by animals,
creatures that screech at night and rustle
through the underbrush all day;
beat back disease and thirst and hunger;
leave footprints in the mud
of a diminishing creek.
We pass through,
disrupt the dance,
part the trees and rain,
and return home.
The crow nods in time with insects
at the side of the road
and waits.
